While committing sin doesn’t automatically mean someone will be possessed by a demon, moments of weakness can make a person vulnerable to spiritual attacks.
When sin becomes a habit and is continually embraced, it creates an opening for the enemy. Many people have shared experiences of feeling something take hold of them—whether it’s rage, anger, or another strong force—leading to moments where they felt out of control. This can happen to anyone, even those who love Jesus, attend church, and strive to live righteously.
The Bible warns us not to give the devil a foothold, urging us to stay alert, focused on Christ, and spiritually watchful. If you sense that you’ve opened a door to the enemy, here are some steps to take toward freedom.
Steps to Deliverance
- Repent
Confess and turn away from any sins you’ve committed, as well as any generational sins that may have impacted your life. This isn’t about seeking forgiveness for ancestors, but rather breaking any lingering spiritual ties that could be affecting you. - Renounce
Verbally renounce any involvement you’ve had with the occult or anything that goes against God’s will. As the Holy Spirit brings things to mind, declare your disconnection from them. - Forgive
One of the most overlooked steps to freedom is forgiveness. Holding on to unforgiveness keeps people in bondage. Choose today to release those who have wronged you and allow God to heal your heart. - Remove Unholy Objects
Examine your home, car, and digital spaces, and get rid of anything the Lord highlights as spiritually harmful. This could include items tied to darkness, the occult, or anything that stirs doubt in your spirit. If you’re unsure about something, ask God for wisdom and direction. - Rebuke the Spirit
Finally, take authority over the spirit and command it to leave in Jesus’ name. If possible, seek out a trusted believer who can pray over you. While the Bible encourages having someone else minister deliverance, self-deliverance is also an option through prayer and faith.
Walking in Freedom
Jesus desires for you to walk in complete freedom and spiritual authority. Stay close to Him, pursue holiness, and live in righteousness. As you do, you’ll not only experience freedom but also maintain it through a life rooted in Christ.
